The Cailleach is often associated with wolves, and represents aspects of the harsh weather during the winter months of Scotland. Once such weather period is named ‘Am Faoilleach’, signifying the period of January into February. The root of the word is fáel (later faol), meaning ‘wolf’. Wolves once roamed our hills and forests here in Scotland, and it’s uncertain when the last one died or was sadly killed.
