The Cailleach is a powerful figure in Scottish and Irish folklore known as a creator, weather deity, and guardian of the land. Cormorants and shags - large dark-feathered sea birds seen stretching their wings out to dry beside bodies of water - are said to be linked with the Cailleach. ‘Cailleach Dubh’ is one of the Scottish Gaelic names for these birds. They were often seen as dark omens, and there are stories which say that the Cailleach is drying her cloak as she stretches her wings out as her bird counterpart.
